Winter Wardrobe 101: Three Must-Have Items

By Amanda Cohen on November 7, 2018

The temperature is cooling down. You slowly see people switching from rompers to jeans and sweaters. Your tan now comes from a spray can instead of the actual sun. It’s getting darker earlier and the need to make a fire in the fireplace is becoming more and more apparent. Ah, yes, winter is finally approaching. For those of you who cringed reading what I said above, I greatly apologize. However, if you’re like me, the upcoming sweater weather puts a big smile on your face!

With the season change comes a wardrobe change; it’s important to understand that just because you have to bundle up, doesn’t mean that you get to ignore the latest trends. It will be easier to go to work or school every day knowing that you are staying in touch with your inner fashionista. Don’t worry though, I’m here to help you! I am here to tell you the must-have items in your winter wardrobe… just think of me as your fashion fairy godmother!

Sweaters with ~Fun and Flirty~ Sleeves

The heading above might be misleading… I am not telling you to go buy a sweater that has some cheesy pick-up-line on the sleeves. Rather, I am telling you that sweaters with embellished/funky sleeves are a must-have in your winter wardrobe. I am personally a fan of the sweaters with the ruffle sleeves, which you can find on Revolve Clothing here, but there are lots of other routes you can go.

There are fringe sleeves, sparkly sleeves, patterned sleeves, distressed sleeves, cropped sleeves, and so much more. The beauty of these sweaters is, since some extra detail was put into the sleeves, you can dress them up or down. You can wear them to a fancy restaurant with some leather pants, or wear them to school with a pair of jeans or leggings. Here are some awesome ~fun and flirty~ sleeved sweaters:

Whistle While you ~Work~ it Pants

I remember the days where having to find appropriate pants for a business casual and business form environment was a hassle. However, now it’s become a trend and you can’t go to a store or shop online without seeing a pair of business-like trousers popping out at you. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, you might be skeptical, but hear me out.

These types of pants are actually really flattering now that designers have taken time to perfect the look. Some of the pants are high-rise, some are cropped at the bottom, but all are tailored to show off the uniqueness and beauty of different body types. The pants come in solid colors, patterns, plaid, suede, velvet, suit-like material, and more. Pair these pants with a fun sweater or a turtleneck with some cute booties and, boom, you’ve got the perfect out for when you have to go to work but want to go to happy hour with your friends right after. Here are some of my favorite whistle while you ~work~ it pants:

The Best Time to Wear a ~Sweater Dress~ is all the Time

If you don’t understand the reference above, I am very upset with you (look up SpongeBob striped sweater). Anyways, sweater dresses are, once again, back to the top of the trend train. The beauty of sweater dresses is that they are extremely versatile: they come in lots of different cuts and materials and you can pair them with tights, belts, thigh-high boots, booties, cute sneakers, and more.

You can wear them to the grocery store, or for Thanksgiving dinner with your family and friends (they are especially good for Thanksgiving dinner since they are generally “forgiving” if you go get thirds at the buffet). Sweater dresses are trendy and comfortable enough to wear to even the longest of meetings or the longest of classes. Here are some of my favorite the best time to wear a ~sweater dress~ is all the time:

So, ladies, don’t waste any more time when it comes to updating your winter wardrobe. Get shopping, get organizing, get ready, because winter is just around the corner and, let’s be honest, you should never wait when it comes to wearing/getting the latest and greatest trends. Also, just a side note, you should always have the following staples at your disposal in your winter wardrobe:

  • Jeans
  • Long sleeves
  • Boots
  • Booties
  • Sweaters
  • Joggers
  • Uggs (lol)
  • Leather pants
  • Warm leggings
  • Beanies
  • Leather jacket

These items are more everyday items, but they are equally, if not more, important than anything else you can splurge on when updating your closet! Happy shopping my fellow fashion connoisseurs!

I am currently a junior at the University of Michigan.
